How this calculator works
US sales tax is rarely one rate: a state rate, a county rate and sometimes city and special-district rates stack on the same purchase. Enter the subtotal and up to two rates; the calculator adds the rates together — which is correct where each is charged on the same base, as they usually are — and returns the combined rate, the tax, and the total a customer actually pays at checkout.
That combined figure is the one that matters for pricing decisions. A product advertised at a round price in two states can carry noticeably different totals, and a seller quoting “plus tax” needs the all-in number before promising a delivered price. The calculator keeps the two components visible so you can see which layer of government each part belongs to when you reconcile.
Good practice and limits
Rates depend on where the sale is taxed, which for shipped goods is often the destination, not your warehouse. If you sell across jurisdictions, the rate is a per-order lookup, not a setting. Keep this calculator for quoting and checking; the filing itself needs the breakdown by jurisdiction that your sales records should already hold.
