How this calculator works

Enter the amount borrowed, the annual interest rate and the term in months. The calculator applies the standard reducing-balance formula — each month's interest is charged on what is still owed, and the fixed instalment covers that interest plus a slice of principal. Alongside the EMI it reports the total interest over the life of the loan and a year-by-year table of principal repaid, interest paid and the balance remaining.

That table explains the feeling every borrower has in year one: the payments are large but the balance barely moves. It is not a trick. Early instalments meet interest on almost the whole loan, so only a small part reduces the debt; as the balance falls, the same instalment quietly becomes mostly principal. Shortening the term raises the EMI but cuts total interest sharply, because the balance spends less time being large.

Good practice and limits

Compare loans on total repaid, not on the instalment alone — a lower EMI stretched over more months usually costs more overall. And check what the quote leaves out: arrangement fees, insurance bundled into the loan and early-repayment charges all sit outside the EMI formula and can reverse an apparently cheaper offer.
